Salazar SF is the product of a rare breeding from Somerset Farms in Santa Ynez, California, shortly before the death of its owner, Lee Romney. Deep Sand Arabian Sport Horses purchased Sal as a 15 month old, after several years of perusing bloodlines. The desire was to acquire a well-bred straight Egyptian stallion who would be a capable sport horse and sire, and also have a top notch temperament. He indeed had these qualities, and even though few trainers wanted him in their barn at the time (due to his habit of nodding off in halter), under the loving management of Chris Culbreth at WillMar Arabians, Sal earned a qualification to Nationals (Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure) in the VERY tough Region II - his very first season under saddle, in classes in excess of 25 horses most times!

In his career, Sal has won numerous Best Conditions in the tough sport of endurance, maintained a 96% completion rate, and been awarded a Conformation award at the quirky and challenging Halloween Horror two day ride - given by the vet staff! It was during these rewarding times that Sal suffered both illness and injury that should have ended his career, and COULD have ended his life - a complete rear suspensory tear (from which he FULLY recovered and went on to complete several 25-50 milers) and a bout of life-threatening endocarditis - a bacterial infection on the head of the aortic valve. Given the very best of care, Sal slowly recovered from weeks of chemo-level antibiotics. His illness and recovery are such a tremendous testament to his unbelievable temperament - for several weeks enduring 5 injections a day! As those days went by, I was CERTAIN that one day he would simply pin his ears and refuse to let me touch him - but he never did. He endured those tough times with gentleness and understanding - and reminded me of the reason we bought him in the first place. Again, Sal recovered to compete in multiple LD endurance races, finishing in fine style - sound, and without the profound murmur that first signaled his illness.

In 2002, under the exceptional riding of our then 15 year old daughter, Sal attended 4 of 5 California Circuit shows, earning multiple season High Points, Championships, and carrying his youthful charge to a Junior season Championship, all in multiple disciplines - all at the wise age of 17!

Now, at rising 20, we have three desires for Sal - all in keeping with his quality, character and antiquity - to return him to the breeding barn so that his blood will not be lost; to return him to those trails he loves so much, in head to head competition with those young fellows just starting endurance; to enjoy those bareback gallops in the fresh meadows on his treasured crisp fall mornings. He is a bit of an enigma in Arabian circles - yet he is more treasured than ever, for his blood, his character, and his many-faceted abilities.
